Rev. Leon L. Copeland, Sr. is a native of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. He attended Norfolk State University where he received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Education and taught public school for several years in Chesapeake, Virginia. He attended Virginia State University, Petersburg where he received the Master of Education Degree. He received the Doctor of Education Degree in Technical Education Administration from Virginia Tech. He is a retired Professor and Chairman of the Department of Technology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Rev. Copeland was appointed Pastor of Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church in June 2010 by Bishop Warren M. Brown. Prior to his appointment at Mt. Hope he served on the ministerial staff at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Salisbury. Rev. Copeland was called to the ministry in 2000 and was ordained as an Elder in the A.M.E. Zion Church in May 2007after completing the Philadelphia Baltimore Conference Studies Curriculum.
Rev. Copeland is married to Mary Bazemore Copeland who is also an active member of Mt. Hope. They have been married for 47 years and they have one son Leon L. Copeland, Jr.
One of his favorite scriptures is, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40;31).
